Technical fabrics

GORE-TEX® fabrics are created by laminating special GORE-TEX® membrane to high performance textiles, then sealing them with an innovative solution for 100% waterproof protection.


The secret of GORE-TEX® fabrics lies within its revolutionary bi-component membrane.
The expanded PTFE portion of the membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapour. So while water in its liquid form cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX® membrane, as moisture vapour (a gas), it can easily escape.
Integrated into the PTFE structure is an oleophobic, or oil hating, substance that allows moisture vapour to pass through, but creates a physical barrier that prevents contaminating substances such as oils, cosmetics, insect repellents and food substances to penetrate the fabric.
The result is a totally waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane.


To construct a GORE-TEX® laminate, the GORE-TEX® membrane is bond between high performance fabrics that are extremely breathable. These laminates can be used to make an entire garment, boot or glove, or be built in as reinforcements in high wear/high abrasion areas.

Seam sealing

The holes made by needles in seams may be small, but they can cause leaks. That's why even the most waterproof, breathable, windproof fabric won't keep you dry and comfortable if the seams are not completely sealed.
For absolute weatherproofness, GORE-TEX® products rely on GORE-SEAM® TAPE and MICRO GORE-SEAM® TAPE technologies. These tapes completely seal every tiny hole created by sewing machine needles when GORE-TEX® fabric is made into garments, footwear or gloves.
Narrower and lighter in weight, MICRO GORE-SEAM® TAPE allows for more functional and modern designs with tighter curves.

Fabrics Performances

Subject other technical fabrics to hard use or frequent washing and chances are they will quickly lose effectiveness. Not GORE-TEX® fabrics. They are guaranteed to be completely waterproof, windproof and breathable for the life of the product.

GORE-TEX® fabrics are completely waterproof because the pores in this membrane are about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, which means no external moisture can penetrate the membrane.
In the windchill effect cold air penetrates your clothing, robbing precious heat from your body’s sensitive microclimate. GORE-TEX® fabric is completely windproof. 


To prevent the discomfort caused by overheating or wet conductive heat loss, perspiration must evaporate so that it doesn't stay trapped inside your clothes, footwear or gloves.
GORE-TEX® products use a revolutionary procedure based on pure science: The pores in the GORE-TEX® membrane are 700 times BIGGER than a water vapour molecule, so water vapour can easily pass through the membrane, it’s going out.

Durability test

Every manufacturer is licensed, every factory is certified and every style is submitted to rigorous tests that push the laws of physics.
There is more than one way to test the durability of a fabric.

Shoe/Boot tester

Every new GORE-TEX® footwear design is flexed in water up to 300,000 times by a water sensing mechanical foot. For a shoe, this is equivalent to a lifetime of walking.

Performance Tests

GORE-TEX® fabrics have to do what they say they do and do it better than any other product available. To achieve this, the fabrics are tested through a wide range of tests. 

Centrifugal Tester

The machine spins water filled footwear at high speeds on pivoting arms, creating enough pressure to force water through even the smallest hole. Any leak is quickly discovered.

Moisture vapour transfer rate

This test measures how much moisture vapour can pass through fabric in a 24-hour period. While there are over 30 different tests to assess this transfer rate, few correctly predict how the product will actually perform. This is because they either don’t take the comfort or breathability of the footwear or garment into account, or they haven’t been correlated to the product’s intended use. At Gore, our tests are designed specifically to predict the actual performance of garments and footwear in real life conditions.

Field Tests

The lab is good, but it's the great outdoors that can make or break functional garments and footwear.
How will a product stand up in real life situations? The only way to know for sure is to test gear in the field. Before making it to the retail sales floor, GORE-TEX® products must survive rigorous field testing.
